USArmy Veteran Makes Citizen’s Arrest of Occupy Attacker

April 3, 2012 in Headline, Occupy, Politics

Early Thursday afternoon US Army veteran and SF Occupier Nick Anthony Shaw apprehended the suspect wanted in the stabbing of Occupy San Francisco member “Boston” earlier this week.

As Shaw physically contained the suspect, nearby policemen were summoned by Shaw and fellow protesters, and the suspect was arrested. Shaw later filed a report at the police department.

*Continued Repression at Protest Site

Police continue to interpret a century-old anti-lodging law in such a way as to infringe on the rights of the protest to continue in the rain. This past Tuesday they insisted on removing a canopy and tarp during pouring rain which resulted in the destruction of the protest’s petitions and signs. Tonight further rain is expected and the protesters expect the police to continue their misinterpretation of the law in order to stop the protest’s ability to maintain its activity.

Several hours after Shaw’s police arrest, the police insisted a second table with anti-fracking petitions be removed.

Occupy Oakland inmates at Santa Rita attacked- developing story

Santa Rita jail in Dublin, CA

(THIS STORY HAS BEEN UPDATED)

In the aftermath of the mass arrests of Occupy Oakland protesters– and whoever else happend to be on the wrong street at the wrong time– on Jan. 28 in Oakland, there have been loads of reports and rumors about brutality inflicted on those arrested. Most of those arrested were held in Santa Rita jail.

My observations:

I spent 20 hours in jail, and I saw some cruel treatment. I saw people suffering after being denied medication. I saw people with allergies to the food that was provided refused any substitute and unable to eat, sometimes for more than 24 hours. I saw people crammed into holding cells meant for groups a third their size, so that some people had to remain standing, sometimes for more than 24 hours. As many arrestees were wearing clothing coated in tear gas and pepper spray, those chemicals continued to waft through cells and affect all present.

Reports:

I have reports directly from sources of arrested occupiers being beat up in jail with police batons. At least 20 people were ziptied, meaning their hands were cuffed behind their backs– and more often than not, if they happen to be cuffed too tightly and their hands go numb and even blue, police won’t loosen them– for more than eight hours. I know that some people who were denied access to a restroom ended up sitting in their own vomit and urine for at least four hours in some cases.

Former Obama Staffer Arrested For Identity Theft, Forgery, Email Hacking Of Iowa Secretary Of State

January 22, 2012 in Headline, Politics

The Iowa Republican:

Barack Obama’s 2008 Iowa New Media Director was arrested Friday for attempting to use the identities of Secretary of State Matt Schultz, and/or his brother Thomas, with the intent to falsely implicate the Secretary Schultz in illegal or unethical behavior. Zach Edwards, 29, of Des Moines, currently works for Link Strategies, a Democrat-affiliated organization with ties to Iowa Senator Tom Harkin. Edwards is the Director of New Media for Link Strategies (His bio has since been scrubbed from the site).

The Secretary of State’s office discovered the alleged crime and reported it to authorities. Edwards turned himself in to the Iowa DCI agents Friday afternoon. He was charged with identity theft, a misdemeanor, and booked into the Polk County jail. Edwards posted $2,000 bail and was released later on Friday. He faces up to two years in prison.

Zach Edwards’ bio on Link Strategies website says he joined the Obama campaign in early 2007 as an intern in Nevada. He eventually joined the New Media department and directed their operations in five other primary states. He was the Iowa Director of New Media for Barack Obama’s general election campaign. After the election, Edwards joined Link Strategies, “where he provides innovative web-based research tools, video analysis and production, and web-based communication tools to assist our clients,” according to the (scrubbed) bio.
